The Next Generation of Culinary Stars Compete for the Title of “America’s Best High School Chef”

Our Culinary Institute of New York (CINY) recently welcomed 48 ambitious high school students from seven states to campus, each bringing their knives, chef’s hats, and a passion for culinary excellence to compete for the coveted title of “America’s Best High School Chef.”

Now in its 16th year, this competition is a hallmark event for young chefs, offering them the opportunity to showcase their skills, receive expert mentorship, and earn life-changing scholarships to one of the nation's top culinary programs.

This year’s America’s Best High School Chef is Sthefani Alberto, a senior from Food and Finance High School in Manhattan, NY. who earned the championship title and a full scholarship to CINY. Second-place winner Andres Angulo of New Rochelle High School was awarded a $6,500 per semester scholarship, while third-place winner London Lewis of Jonesboro High School in Kenner, La., received a $5,500 per semester scholarship.

From the very first round, the competition tested students’ precision, technique, and creativity. The day began with the Basic Skills Round, where competitors meticulously julienned and tournéed potatoes, diced onions to perfection and expertly segmented oranges in the classic “supreme” style.

Despite remarkable performances from all participants, only the top 16 students advanced to the Salad Basket Round, where they faced the challenge of crafting a stunning salad using an array of ingredients – ranging from crisp romaine lettuce and red wine vinegar to unexpected elements like golden raisins and goat cheese.

The stakes were raised in the Mystery Basket Final Round where the top four students had just one hour to transform a surprise set of ingredients into an upscale restaurant-quality entrée. This year’s basket featured whole chicken, goat cheese, fingerling potatoes, spinach, tomatoes, and wild mushrooms.

In an impressive display of technique and creativity, Sthefani wowed the judges with a beautifully plated goat cheese-stuffed chicken breast, paired with a rich mushroom sauce, herb-roasted potatoes, fresh tomatoes and wilted spinach. With his dish, combined with her exceptional performance in the Basic Skills and Salad Basket rounds, Sthefani secured her title as “America’s Best High School Chef.”

“The competition is truly the highlight of the year for me,” said Chef Frank Costantino, Dean of School of Hospitality Management and CINY.

“Every year, we see an extraordinary group of students who bring talent, determination and a love for the craft. It’s also a special moment for us to celebrate the rich history of this competition, reconnecting with past participants who are now thriving as CINY students and alumni in the culinary industry.”

The event wasn’t just about crowning the next generation of top chiefs. It was also a homecoming.

CINY alumni, now professional chefs, returned to mentor, cheer on and judge this year’s competitors. Chef Jake Costantino, Chef Nicholas Giambrone, and Chef Jeovanny Adames served as judges for ABHSC, offering expertise and encouragement to the students vying for this year’s title.

With another successful year in the books, CINY remains committed to nurturing future culinary leaders and providing students with opportunities to turn their passion into a profession.

Congratulations to Sthefani Alberto and all the competitors who showcased their dedication, talent, and love for the art of cooking. We can’t wait to see what you do next!
