Foundational Literacy for Students with Disabilities
This course provides graduate-level teacher candidates with an examination of linguistics relative to typical and delayed language acquisition with research-based methods and strategies in the teaching of foundational literacy skills to students with disabilities. Candidates will learn to assess reading abilities, identify skill deficits, and design targeted, data-driven literacy instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, using frameworks such as Response to Intervention (RTI) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Emphasis is placed on structured literacy interventions, explicit and systematic instruction, and assistive technology to align with IEP (Individualized Education Programs) literacy goals.
Additionally, through instruction and research, candidates will be able to adapt materials to meet the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students, and provide modifications, accommodations, and technologies to enable those with disabilities to access grade-level content and be successful on statewide assessments.
