  • Career Services for International Students

The United States Immigration and Citizenship Services (USCIS) regulations allow for some employment opportunities for foreign students.

However, employment without proper authorization is a serious violation of status.

Therefore, all employment support for international students must be authorized. Students must meet with an advisor in International Student Services prior to beginning any paid employment.

In addition, some students will require authorization from the USCIS. International Student Services staff can help with that, too.

Employment Options for International (F-1) Students

Students must be in good academic standing for any employment.

    • On-Campus Employment - While school is in session, all employment for international students is part-time (up to 20 hours per week).
    • Internships
    • Optional Practical Training (OPT) - This is a one-year full-time work permit that students apply for when they complete their degree program. International Student Services can assist with OPT applications.

Note: In April 2008, USCIS approved a 17-month extension for students who are completing a 12-month OPT. This permits 29-month employment for certain STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) degree holders. This includes some Monroe School of Information Technology graduates. For more information on qualifications, speak with International Student Services. Follow this link for details on current OTP rules.
