Internet Job Hunting tips

  • Keep your Job Hunting focused and organized.  Make the most of your time by setting job objectives (job title, location, salary range, etc.) and create a target list of companies to pursue.

  • Post your resume to as many job banks as possible.  That way you'll get maximum exposure to employers.

  • Keywords:  When recruiters select resumes, they use specialized software that choose resumes based on keyword searches.  It is very important that you include the specifics of your skills and coursework.  For example, if you are an Information Technology major, include all the relevant software and hardware you know as well as the classes that are relevant to your major.  It is especially helpful if you know exactly what kind of job you're looking for because then you can more readily anticipate the Keywords that a recruiter might look for.

  • Send your resume as an attachment unless the ad your answering requires it to be posted into the body of the email.    Many job-search and corporate sites allow you to respond to specific openings by completing an online form and then pasting in your resume before sending it.

  • Make sure that you use a proper business email address when including your email address.  Your email address reflects who you are; you want to show the recruiter that you are a professional and serious candidate.

  • Often, your initial communication with an employer will be via e-mail.  Make it short and to the point.  Cite the job you want in the "subject" line of your e-mail.  Mention it again in the "objective" section of your resume, along with your overall qualifications.  You can follow-up by regular mail by sending a longer cover letter and printed version of your resume. Always check spelling, grammar, and punctuation carefully.

  • Beware:  on the Internet you can develop a lasting reputation, good or bad.  Think about what impression you might be creating in your messages.  Never be unpleasant to others, no matter how justified you might feel.  Instead, be as helpful as possible by providing information, suggestions and ideas.

  • Some companies post multiple job openings on one web site; only apply to the positions that you are qualified for, otherwise you will not be considered a serious candidate.  Recruiters get frustrated when receiving resumes from unqualified candidates.  Be sure you read the job posting carefully and apply only when they match your background and interest.

  • Do not make the mistake of "putting all your eggs in one basket".  Pursue a number of different avenues and explore a variety of search methods, whether the newspaper, Internet, or a placement agency.  Of course, devote the most time to those that offer the best results.

  • Always remember -Finding the right job is a Full Time job!
