Monroe College is rolling out the red carpet for American servicemen and women by making college education available and affordable in conjunction with the US Department of Veteran Affairs Yellow Ribbon bill.  According to the bill’s provisions, veterans qualifying for the Yellow Ribbon program may receive an award equal to the amount necessary to cover tuition and fees.

“We can think of no more deserving students than the men and women who have courageously protected our freedoms across the world,” said Monroe College President Stephen J. Jerome.  “While this is technically defined as a voluntary program for colleges, I can tell you that Monroe College sees it as an imperative.  We are prepared to proudly support these brave men and women in their quest for bright futures here at home.”

Because of a 75-year tradition of providing higher education geared towards building careers, Monroe is well-suited to supporting veterans as they attempt to reintegrate into civilian life.  Virtually of the college’s degree programs are career-oriented and Monroe specializes in “real-world” academic experiences that facilitate an easy transition from the classroom into the world of work.

“Veterans are going to love the Monroe College experience,” said Dr. Stephen Waldow, Vice President for Academics.  “In fact, I suspect that while they are benefitting from the real-world classroom experience that we provide, the entire college community will benefit from the real world experiences they will bring into the classrooms.” 

Veterans have the added advantage of being able to transfer in credits earned in basic training and other military experiences they’ve had.   This will undoubtedly give them a head start in earning their college degrees.
